Blk Hypocrisy artwork was inspired from well-known, Jamaican dancehall queen and music artist named “Spice.” The music artist’s song, spelled Black Hypocrisy, is from her 2018 album titled "Captured." Spice’s song resonated with me after seeing her ‘why’ while watching the show Love and Hip Hop Atlanta, where she boldly painted her skin a light shade to mimic ‘bleached skin’ in order to highlight the problems that exist within the Black community and her personal experiences with it. My Blk Hypocrisy rendition of Spice’s song parallels her idea and aims to be a controversial piece bringing to light colorism within the black community. It also calls out the music industry that seeks to require artists to recreate themselves for better profit: to market straighter, longer tresses, lighter complexions and a particular body type to appease trends and behaviors of the consumers. The audience for this particular record are like the factory-made dolls on this very cover who, consciously or unconsciously support these behaviors. At the very top right, is the ‘Face’ of the company or those other famous black women, mimicking the same and validating the behavior.
